Fine BTO powder itself does not have lubricating property, but it may be applied to produce a new type solid lubricant - tungsten disulfide. Tungsten disulfide (WS2) adopts a layered structure related to molybdenum disulfide (MoS2), with W atoms situated in trigonal prismatic coordination sphere. As lubricant, WS2 has better performance than MoS2, such as larger compressive strength and lower friction coefficient.
Tungsten disulfide is dark gray hexagonal crystal with a layered structure. WS2 has two different crystal forms. They are α- WS2 and β- WS2. Tungsten disulfide is used as a dry lubricant for fasteners, bearings, and molds. WS2 is suitable for lubrication under high temperature, high pressure, high load and high vacuum conditions. It may be added to make self-lubricating components in engineering plastics. It can also be mixed with volatile solvents and sprayed onto surfaces of metal. Besides, it can be used in press forging to increase die life and workpiece finish. WS2 is also a component of certain catalysts used for hydrodesulfurization and hydrodenitrification.
