Lead tungstate is a white to pale yellow powdery solid with the chemical formula of PbWO4, molecular weight of 455.03800 and CAS No. of 7759-01-5. It belongs monoclinic system. It is insoluble in water. And it is soluble in alkaline, sodium hydroxide solutions. It is available in 99.9% purity grade.
Producing Methods
1. By heating tungsten powder and PbO2.
2. The reaction between tungsten powder and lead oxide (Ⅱ) under high temperature.
3. By mixing solutions of lead nitrate and sodium tungstate, concentrating, and crystallizing.
As a kind of scintillating material, high-quality lead tungstate crystal (PWO crystal) is a hot topic in research field at home and abroad in recent years. It has a wide range of applications in the field of high-energy physics and nuclear medicine. It attributed to the advantages of the PWO crystal owns, such as high density, short radiation length and Moliere radius, fast flash decay time and strong resistance to radiation damage.
PbWO4 can be used as filler material for anti-ionizing radiation products in nuclear power plants. Its particle size directly affects the protection capability against ionizing radiation. And the smaller the particle size, the more evenly dispersed, the better the protective ability of protective equipment. So it's better to produce the lead tungstate of smaller grain size.
