Lithium Battery Anode Material: Tungsten Disulfide

As a lithium battery anode material, tungsten disulfide (WS2) is suitable for storing lithium ions. The capacity and power density that WS2 can provide far exceed the traditional anode material - graphite. Therefore, WS2 is considered as a promising anode material for lithium batteries.

lithium battery anode material: tungsten disulfide picture

Lithium batteries with characteristics of high capacity and high power are mostly used for electric vehicle batteries. So, the research on the anode materials, cathode materials and separator materials of lithium batteries is the key to the development of lithium batteries for electric vehicles. Taking the lithium battery anode material as an example, the experts said that the "sandwich" structure of tungsten disulfide crystals makes it easy for lithium ions to intercalate and deintercalate. WS2 is formed by stacking S-W-S unit layers with a sandwich structure. The unit layer is composed of two sulfur atom layers (the upper and lower layer) and a tungsten atom layer in the middle through a covalent bond. And there is only a weak Van der Waals interaction between the unit layers. This special layered structure makes tungsten disulfide easy for lithium ions to intercalate and deintercalate.
