STM Probe: Tungsten Needle

STM probe is often a tungsten needle. STM is the abbreviation of scanning tunneling microscope. STM measures the electronic state distribution of the sample near the tip. The smaller the tip size of the tungsten probe, the higher the resolution, and the higher the imaging quality.

STM probe: tungsten needle picture

It has been reported that for an STM, good resolution is considered to be 0.1 nm lateral resolution and 0.01 nm depth resolution. With this resolution, individual atoms within materials are routinely imaged and manipulated. The STM can be used not only in ultra-high vacuum but also in air, water, and various other liquid or gas ambients. The most commonly used preparation method for tungsten probe in the laboratory is electrochemical corrosion method, a relatively mature and simple preparation method, which has the advantages of simple principles and equipment, easy control, good repeatability, and low cost. STM probe can also use metal wires such as molybdenum wire, gold wire, platinum-iridium alloy wire, and stainless steel wire as raw materials. But tungsten wire is the most suitable probe material for STM applications.
